Workplace Profile

City of Cockburn is located on the coastline of Western Australia, approximately 15 kilometres south of the Perth CBD. It is bounded in the north by the Cities of Fremantle, Melville, and Canning, in the east by the City of Armadale, in the south by the Town of Kwinana. This coastal City is renowned for its historical and tourism features along with its agriculture and ship building industries.

Cockburn boasts some of Western Australia's best inland lakes, major tourism attractions, and leisure activities.

Health and Wellbeing Achievements

The City of Cockburn is committed to the health and wellbeing of their staff and has a Wellness Committee that governs workplace health initiatives. They received recognition as they:

  • Have a detailed calendar of events outlining what they are going to implement as part of their workplace health and wellbeing program
  • Have a Wellness Committee that meets regularly to discuss employee health and wellbeing
  • Implemented the Fresh Start smoking cessation program to support staff members to quit smoking
  • Provide facilities that enable staff to participate in physical activity before, during or after work, including showers and changing rooms
  • Have a TravelSmart Plan which encourages staff to actively commute to and from work. The City also provides and encourages staff to use their free fleet bikes and Corporate Smart Rider cards to attend meetings throughout the working day
  • Provide free exercise classes to all staff including bodyPLUS, bodyFLEX and bodyBLITZ
  • Have healthy prizes for staff that participate in group fitness sessions such as massages and sport packs which include a gym bag, skipping rope and an exercise mat
  • Currently trialling sit-stand workstations at the administration building and also have sit-stand workstations at the Youth Centre and Library
  • Encourage staff to break up their sitting time by having standing or walking meetings
  • Provide healthy eating education sessions including the "Lunch Box Club" which teaches staff how to prepare a healthy lunch
  • Hold workplace challenges such as the "Two week - 2 fruit and 5 veg lunch box challenge." This challenge involved forming teams and encouraging each other to reach their daily targets. The winners received a healthy lunch
  • Provide healthy snacks for staff members, including free fruit
  • Amended their Gift and Rewards policy to remove the gifting of alcohol to staff
  • Participated in the Dry July campaign and distributed information to raise awareness of the risks associated with drinking too much alcohol. Also sent staff healthy "Mocktail" recipes
