Leadership in Workplace Health and Wellbeing
How can I get management to understand the benefits of creating a healthy workplace and support the program with appropriate resourcing?
This is a unique opportunity to learn from an experienced panel of WA workplaces about the benefits of investing in a workplace health program (WHP) and why management support and leadership is vital to success.
Evidence suggests that the most successful programs are those that have widespread support and leadership from the CEO or senior management team.
How you go about gaining and maintaining management support will depend on your workplace. If you’re in a small workplace, you may just need to meet with the company owner or a senior manager to discuss your plans. If you’re in a larger workplace, developing a business case may be the best approach.
Healthier Workplace WA has received consistent feedback from WA workplaces highlighting that lack of management support is a major barrier to implementing their workplace health and wellbeing program.
The ‘Leadership in Workplace Health and Wellbeing’ panel session will be facilitated by former ABC presenter James Lush.
Our first panel member, Prof Trevor Shilton, Director of Cardiovascular Health, Heart Foundation WA will present on the overall importance of management support in the success of WHPs.
Trevor is Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Health at Curtin University and a member of the Board of the University of Western Australia, Centre for Built Environment and Health. He has directed major community-wide initiatives, including social marketing campaigns in physical activity, obesity and tobacco control, as well as state-wide and national initiatives in workplace health and school health. Trevor is also the Chairman of the Heathier Workplace WA program, a program that has worked with more than 2,500 workplaces in WA and has more than 50 workplaces recognised as having best practice WHPs through the Recognised Healthy Workplace Program.
The other panel members represent a range of industries and business sizes:

- Maxine Plant - Director of Facilities and Services, Edith Cowan University
- Jennie Milne - General Manager Human Resources, RAC WA
This session will consist of a 90-minute facilitated discussion, whereby the panel will be asked a series of questions relating to the importance of management support in the success of WHPs. Each workplace will have approximately 10-15 minutes to discuss their program and answer the questions. A further 15 minutes will be allocated at the end of the session for questions from audience and webinar members.
At the end of the session the panel experts will have answered the following:
- Why do you support workplace health and wellbeing?
- Which arguments did you find most compelling and convinced you to support a health and wellbeing program in your workplace?
- What were the immediate, medium term, long-term benefits or impacts of the program?
- What were the factors that have made your program successful?
- What advice would you give to organisations who are not yet investing in employee health and wellbeing?
Before the session, we recommend that you do the following to make sure you get the most out of it:
1. Take the Healthier Workplace WA Workplace Health Check to:
- Identify gaps and priorities in your workplace in relation to the risk factors of smoking, unhealthy eating, alcohol and physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour.
- Assess your workplace on healthy policy, supportive infrastructure, education and activities which are the essential elements of a comprehensive program.
- Receive a tailored report with specific recommendations to help you get started in creating your healthier workplace.
