Edith Cowan University (ECU) is a large multi-campus University serving communities in Western Australia with a significant cohort of international students. With more than 1700 staff, ECU has a large and diverse workforce, extending beyond the metropolitan area. It has continuously held a five star rating for teaching quality for the past eight years and topped student satisfaction rankings in 2017.

Health and Wellbeing Achievements

  • Detailed action plan outlining key strategies for implementation over the next 12 months.
  • Dedicated Health and Wellness Working Party with the program coordinator supported by over 800 ‘wellness legends’ who help to promote the Live Life LongerProgram and encourage staff involvement.  
  • Dedicated staff wellness portal enabling staff to have access to health information 24/7 which includes two online programs – Stress Less for Life and Eat Well be Well.
  • Smoke-free workplace policy supported by the promotion of access to on campus General Practitioners, Smoker Care plans with Nicotine Replacement Treatment and Counselling.
  • Conduct ongoing staff consultation and evaluation to measure the impact and success of their program.
  • Actively promote and encourage staff to use public transport, cycle and walk to and from work
  • End of journey facilities to encourage physical activity and active transport.
  • Encourage staff to use active transport to and from work meetings and provide Corporate Smart Riders for staff to use.
  • Flexible working hours policy
  • Regularly host bike to work events, using free healthy breakfasts, bike workshops and bike maintenance checks as an incentive to participate.
  • An annual wellness calendar of events for staff to participate in.
  • Access to confidential health risk assessment through the staff wellness portal with tailored feedback and advice about making healthy lifestyle changes following completion.
  • Wellness Expos and targeted monthly Men’s and Women’s Business lunches with guest speakers
  • Regular wellness events and access to free health checks and flu vaccinations
  • Free education sessions including cooking demonstrations, healthy eating, stress management, physical activity and financial information sessions to give staff practical skills and inspiration to make healthy lifestyle changes.  
  • Access to ECU’s Sport and Fitness facilities with a range of ongoing lunchtime exercise classes including yoga and circuit training.
  • An online 10 week exercise program and other ongoing on-campus activity challenges
  • Provide staff benefits and incentives to encourage healthy behaviours.
  • Availability of sit to stand work stations in new fit-outs
  • Encourage staff to take regular breaks from sedentary work and have developed and promoted the ‘Break away from your desk’ campaign including healthy eating information.
  • Promote and encourage staff to participate in community events such as the HBF Run for a Reason and City to Surf.
