General Gumala Foundation

Workplace Profile

The General Gumala Foundation was established as a public benevolent institution in 1997. This followed the signing of the Yandi Land Use Agreement between the Gumala people (peoples of the Banyjima, Innawonga and Nyiyaparli language groups in the Pilbara) and Hammersley Iron, now Rio Tinto. The land use agreement was the first of its kind in Australia, and enables Rio Tinto to undertake mining activity on the traditional lands of the Gumala peoples in exchange for compensation. The Foundation was established with the objectives for the relief of poverty, sickness, suffering, distress, misfortune or destitution of the Traditional Owners of the land being used for mining activity.

The Gumala Foundation comprises two entities - Gumala Investments Pty Ltd and Gumala Aboriginal Corporation, and has 19 employees who are based in Perth and Tom Price.
