Workplace profile

WA Local Government Association (WALGA) represents the 139 local governments (also known as City, Town or Shire Councils) in WA. WALGA is not a government agency, but rather a membership based not-for-profit that works on behalf of its local government members.

Health and wellbeing achievements

WALGA has adopted a supportive workplace culture that focuses on the health and wellbeing of their staff. Their West Leederville office was purpose built with healthy lifestyles in mind and was awarded a 5 Star Green Star rating as certified by the Green Building Council of Australia.

Senior management have demonstrated their committment to supporting and encouraging workers to make healthy choices through implementing healthy workplace policies, supportive environments, education sessions and healthy activities. They have/provide:

  • Sit-stand meeting room tables, work stations and lunchroom tables to encourage workers to break up their sitting time throughout the day.
  • An inviting stair case at the entrance of the building to encourage workers and visitors to use the stairs, rather than take the lift.
  • End of trip facilities (including changing rooms, lockers and secure bike storage) to encourage workers to actively commute (walk, cycle or catch public transport) to and from work.
  • An e-bike and SmartRider cards available for staff to use when travelling to and from external meetings.
  • Opportunities for staff to be physically active during work hours. For example, they have lunch time yoga and pilates.
  • Fantastic kitchen and lunch room facilities to encourage workers to prepare healthy meals and eat away from their desk.
  • Refrigertators in work vehicles so that staff who travel can have healthy food on-the-go.
  • Free fruit, yoghurt and nuts in the staff lunch room and healthy options at catered events/meetings.

Healthier Workplace WA has free tools and resources to keep your health and wellbeing program running smoothly.
