Workplace Profile

Lotterywest was established in 1932 and runs the lottery in Western Australia. Lotterywest is a statutory authority of the Government of Western Australia and aims to enhance the quality of life and well-being of all Western Australians. Lotterywest has proudly supported the Western Australian community for over 80 years and remains committed to its vision to build a better Western Australian together.

In 2018 - 2019 Healthway amalgamated with Lotterywest as part of the machinery of government changes. Healthway’s role is to promote and facilitate good health and activities in Western Australia that encourage healthy lifestyles. The amalgamation allows both agencies to work together positively to focus on their collective work - building a better and healthier Western Australia.

Health and Wellbeing Profile

The Lotterywest Wellness Program has been running for approximately 6 years and is coordinated by the People and Culture team.

Planning

Following support from the Corporate Executive Team, which included allocating a budget for the People and Culture Team to plan and coordinate staff health and wellbeing activities, a Wellness Program was launched. A sub-committee to oversee staff health and wellbeing, and occupational safety and health, was also established. 

Health and Wellbeing Program Activities

The Lotterywest Wellness Program implements the following activities:

  • Dedicated Program Coordinator to oversee and implement health and wellbeing activities
  • Removal of designated smoking areas with smoking cessation support available to staff
  • No alcohol served at whole of staff events, such as end of year functions
  • Staff education and awareness raising presentations
  • Healthy catering options for internal events
  • Subsidised staff fitness activities such as yoga, tennis and volleyball
  • Sit-stand workstations 
  • Corporate smart riders and end of trip facilities to encourage staff to actively commute 
  • Comprehensive online portal where staff can access health and wellbeing information
  • Individual Health Assessments including flu vaccinations and skin checks

Staff consultation and evaluation is carried out by assessing employee feedback, awareness and participation. In addition, Lotterywest run a bi-annual staff engagement survey which includes feedback on the Wellness Program.

Three top tips from Lotterywest and Healthway for other workplaces include:

  1. Seek ideas from staff about what they’d like – aside from targeting activities to the interests of staff, the process itself is an advertisement and generates excitement;
  2. Gain buy-in from management/executive right from the start; and
  3. Have a well-balanced range of activities – a balanced mix of activities that such as educational seminars, practical demos and physical activity groups creates a diversity and continued interest.
